What ideas did you use to make this work?
This piece was made with the idea of skeletonization in mind; that is, every component that is structural is prominent, while the display case itself rests within the frame.
Which materials did you use to make this work?
This piece was made entirely from solid wood and oil-based finishes.
Which processes did you use to make this work?
Standard solid-wood joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and detail carving.
How did this work relate to the questions that guided your Sustained Investigation?
This is the piece that inspired all the other pieces in my Sustained Investigation. This piece determined the colors and styling of all other pieces in the portfolio, and it became the standard by which the other pieces were judged.
What kinds of practice, experimentation, and revision were involved in making this work?
Both the outside legs and the internal dividers took a lot of trial and error to get right. Almost all of the detail carving in the corners of the display cases and along the ends of the rails was done on a whim to add more depth to the front face.
